about

In a show of serious ingenuity, singer-songwriter Gayle Skidmore played 15 instruments on Make Believe, self-released it on her own label and drew a coloring book to go with it. But it’s Skidmore’s heartfelt songwriting and agonizingly vulnerable lyricism that makes her first full-length truly special. Top track: “Hollow”Defining verse: “Don’t breathe a word, you’ll break me.” --Peter Holslin, San Diego City Beat

Track Name: Set Me Free
I’m a bird in a cage
I’m gonna sing until you set me free, you set me free
If life is a stage, I want to see who gets to hide behind the scenes, behind the scenes
I don’t believe you’ll let me stay
Behind the bars I’m locked away
You’re gonna break me out of my cell
I’m gonna find myself and fly
Out of my cage
I’m gonna sing until you set me free, you set me free
If life is a stage, I want to be who gets to hide behind the scenes, behind the scenes
If I could be so lucky
To see behind what’s here
Pull back the curtain tonight
Would the revelation bring, bring me a pair of wings
And a key that fits just right in the door of my cage?
I don’t believe you’ll let me stay
Behind the bars I’m locked away
You’re gonna break me out of my cell
I’m gonna find myself and fly

Track Name: Hollow
I can’t blame you, no, you’re much too clever
Set it up so perfectly so that I could never
Blame you for us spending time together
Your intricately woven lies are innocuous from the outside
But inside you are hollow, like the eye of a storm
With a hole like a tunnel where your heart should have gone
And it’s all gone wrong
I can’t blame you; technically you said it
That you don’t want me and you don’t regret it
And I can’t claim that you’ve done me any harm
Since you said you didn’t love me when I was lying in your arms
Inside you are hollow, like the eye of a storm
With a hole like a tunnel where your heart should have gone
It’s all gone wrong
And therein dies my hope, crippled and broken on a hangman’s rope
And God as my witness stood by and let me do this
I don’t understand it at all, no I don’t.
I can’t blame you, no, there are ties to sever
And my heart dies a little more every time you tell me ‘never’
There are too many memories to burn this time
And inside you are hollow, like the eye of a storm
With a hole like a tunnel where your heart should have gone
And inside you are hollow, like the eye of a storm
With a hole like a tunnel where your heart should have gone
And my heart is hollow where your love should have gone, but it’s just gone
Track Name: Remember
Don’t breathe a word, you’ll break me
My fragile arms are made of glass
And what remains of what’s within me
Is only wisps of smoke and ash
Remember, remember, for soon I will be
A shadow, a whisper, an echo of me
Don’t turn away, don’t you sleep now
December’s slipping slowly away
The stars are hushed and they are dreaming
My broken heart will finally cave
Only a moment more and I will be
A pile of rubble and decay
Only a moment more and I will be a passing thought
And melt away, away
Don’t twist your thoughts around me
My frail heart is brittle now
And what remains of what was there when you found me
Is begging to be buried deep down
Remember, remember
For soon I will be
A shadow, a whisper
A memory
credits
Track Name: Annabelle
Chin up, chin up, you’ve got your guns
Chin up, chin up, it’s all you want
Chin up, chin up, it’s all you want
Chin up, chin up, don’t give up
Don’t let the absence bind you
Don’t let the darkness find you
It’s just the thought that kills you
Let it go
But you feel his face against your own
And you feel the hands that covered yours
Oh, Annabelle, just let it go
You never did, and you’ll never know
And this conversation with yourself was written for somebody else
Stand up, stand up, don’t let your blood escape your heart
And don’t give up
Pull in the air through your crooked teeth and don’t despair
And please don’t weep
I am reaching, still, to catch your soul
If you should feel the death knell toll
I am reaching, still, to catch your soul
Oh, Annabelle, I’d miss you so, if you should say you have to go
And this conversation with myself is hard enough with you around
What if you’re gone?
Oh, Annabelle, oh how can I, how can I say the word, “goodbye”?
So I’ll sing for you a lullaby, no single word to make you cry
Track Name: Bad For Me
You make me nervous
You double-talk your way under my skin
Oh yes, you irritate me so—and I don’t deserve it!
You complicate the simplest equations with your devilry and woes
You’re breaking my soul
And I think you’re bad for me (woah, woah)
You kill like a slow disease (woah, woah)
I think you’re bad for me (woah, woah)
I’m gonna pull your words out slowly from my head and keep you far away from me
You make me anxious
You make me second-guess my every move
Oh yes, my confidence is gone, and I feel worthless
Well, how did I succumb to this?
I thought I had you figured… I was wrong; and you led me on
I think you’re bad for me (woah, woah)
You kill like a slow disease (woah, woah)
I think you’re bad for me (woah, woah)
I’m gonna pull your words out slowly from my head
What do you know about it? What do you know about love?
What do you know about it? All that you know is breaking my soul
I think you’re bad for me (woah, woah)
You kill like a slow disease (woah, woah)
I think you’re bad for me (woah, woah)
I’m gonna pull your words out slowly from my head and keep you far away from me

Track Name: Paper Wings
Teach me to know your voice
Speak aloud and say my name
Silence my fears and still the noise that is dancing in my brain
From here on out I’ll burn much brighter
Deep inside the timbre of your love
We’ve only just the one life
We’ve barely just begun, and then we die
Paper wings aren’t strong enough to fly
Teach me to know your voice
Speak aloud and say your name
With eyes closed and heart awake
I will learn to still my brain
We’ve only just the one life
We’ve barely just begun, and then we die
Paper wings aren’t strong enough to fly
Softly you sing over me
Give me ears to hear and eyes to see
Tell me that you’ll never leave
You’ll be there when my wings catch fire and I fall into the sea
We’ve only just the one life
We’ve barely just begun, and then we die
Paper wings aren’t strong enough to fly
So carry me to your side when I die
Track Name: Nightingale
Nightingale sings a song that he’s written just for me
But I’ll share with you, dear… I’m the sailor; you’re the sea
A curious religion, my heart within your hands
I know that neither you nor I will ever leave again
A curious religion, my heart within your hands
I know that neither you nor I will ever leave again
We’re going to build our house under the sycamore tree
We can climb up high where we can feel the breeze
And when our hearts grow old, we’ll be buried there
And evermore it will shelter all we shared
Sunlit dreams ‘neath the tree
Thoughts are dancing in the wind that softly blows over me
This is where love begins
A curious religion, my heart within your hands
I know that neither you nor I will ever leave again
A curious religion, my heart within your hands
I know that neither you nor I will ever leave again
We’re going to build our house under the sycamore tree
And when the rain beats down, here in peace we’ll sleep
And when our hearts grow old, we’ll be buried there
And feed the tree that shelters all we shared
We’re going to build our house under the sycamore tree
We can climb up high where we can feel the breeze
And when our hearts grow old, we’ll be buried there
And evermore it will shelter all we shared
Track Name: Firecrackers
When we meet it will feel like I have always known you
And when we touch, like firecrackers burning in our skin
When we kiss it will feel like I was meant to kiss you
And we’ll fall hopelessly in love
This I promise
I’m gonna love you better than you ever thought you’d know
I’m gonna be there for you, and where you go I will go
In the night we will sneak into each other’s dreams
And when we talk, our conversations brightly gleam
There is no brighter star, no lovelier thing than this, my promise
I’m gonna love you better than you ever thought you’d know
I’m gonna be there for you, and where you go I will go
I’m gonna love you better than you ever thought you’d know
I’m gonna be there for you, and where you go I will go
Our hearts aglow like angels in the snow
The sunrise waits and beckons us to go
Never falter, walk steadily and slow
And I’ll wait, I promise
I’ll wait, I promise
I’ll wait, I promise
I’ll wait
I’ll wait, I promise
I’ll wait, I promise
I’ll wait
Track Name: Turn Up The Radio
The empty house next door speaks of things that are no more
The empty walls echo back the voice that calls, wondering where you are
The empty streets we used to roam have been whispering since you’ve gone
But I close my ears, pretending I don’t hear them call your name
I turn up the radio, turn down my heart
Turn up the stereo, don’t fall apart
I’ve got a ways to go, and oh! it’s hard to make it if I never start
I cuddle up to dreams, ‘cause after chasing all these things
I realized I don’t love anything you didn’t touch
In quiet moments when I hide and don’t let the world make me decide
My heart still beats at thoughts of you
The most gentle soul I ever knew
So I turn up the radio, turn down my heart
Try to forget you, but dying’s an art
And I’ve got a ways to go, and oh! it’s hard
To get there if I cannot start
I’ve almost forgotten what it’s like to see a doorway with you inside
But I won’t forget my foolish love
Though when all is said and done it wasn’t enough
So I turn up the radio, turn down my heart
No matter where I go I’ll always love the very thought of you
And what it was that made you shine so much
Turn up the radio, turn down my heart
Turn up the stereo, don’t fall apart
I’ve got a ways to go and oh it’s hard to make it if I never start
credits
Track Name: Promise
Believe—I am going to be there if you fall
I will!
Believe I’m strong enough to carry the whole load
I am
And I promise to save you
I promise you
Trust that I am going to honor every vow
I will
Trust that I am going to conquer every fear
I am
And I promise to save you
I promise you
I know just what you need
Believe and you’ll be free
I know just what you need
Believe and you’ll be free with me
Believe I am going to be there if you fall
I will
Believe I am strong enough to carry the whole load
I am
And I promise to save you
I promise to save you
I promise you
Track Name: Paper Box
I built myself a paper box to live inside of
And underneath the paper moon I hug my paper dolls
I draw smiles on their faces and I write all of their happy thoughts
And put them on my walls
I’m so happy with my paper family
I’m so happy, and everybody loves me
Here inside my paper box there is no room for angry thoughts
Unhappy tears are out of place upon a paper face
My heart’s made of papier-mâché and painted red
And taught to move with every kiss I give away
And taught to love this paper room
And I’m so happy with my paper family
I’m so happy and everybody loves, loves, loves me
The paper leaves are falling fast on my origami garden by the sea
Pieces of a life that’s passed
You were only ever real to me, to me
I built myself a paper box
Track Name: Honey, I'm Sorry
Honey, I’m sorry that I treated you so mean
And I’m sorry that I said those awful things
If I could I would take back every word
I must have sounded so absurd
You were so, so right, right from the start
You were so, so right about my heart
It was always my fault—you were never to blame
I put your arms around me and when you called, I came
It was always my fault—you were never to blame
I put your arms around me and when you called, I came running, running to you
Honey, I’m sorry that I listened to you speak
And I’m so sorry that I believed every word
I should have known that in my arms you were too weak
I should have known that I would just get burned
You were so, so right, innocent as a dove
You were so, so right about love
It was always my fault—you were never to blame
I put your arms around me and when you called, I came
It was always my fault—you were never to blame
I put your arms around me
And when you called, I came
And I should have seen, I should have seen that it was me who saw it through
I should have seen that it was me
I broke my own heart over you
Track Name: Zion
I was born to hide with you
To be folded in
To wear your heart with my shirt and shoes
Your mind is a scarf around my neck
Let’s run to Zion
I was made to wait with you
To be ushered in
And when I get the word from you that I can leave my skin
Let’s run to Zion
Let’s run and never come back
Your lips brought me to life
A kiss fully divine
Your lips brought me to life
A kiss fully divine
So I will wait with you
I will wait with you
I will wait with you
I’ll wait
Let’s run to Zion
Let’s run and never come back
Track Name: Make Believe
If I could make believe I’d be alive
No matter how long it takes you to come and find me
If I could make believe I’m not going to die
I would pretend you’d stay around for all time
For all time
